Thiruvalluvar — An ancient Tamil Saint who taught life to humanity.

The Thirukkural is an ancient literature that guides people on better living.

Though written over 2,000 years ago by Thiruvalluvar in Tamil, the way of life advised by Thirukkural is still relevant today.

It is our effort and attempt to bring the wealth of knowledge embedded in Thirukkural about Morality, socio-economic values and Pleasure dealing with psychological values and love;and these are accessible to everyone.

The Thirukkural was written on wisdom and it is divided into three major chapters - those that speak about virtue, wealth and love.

Thirukkural is at the very heart of the ocean of Tamil literature.

Thirukkural is composed of 1,330 kurals in 133 sections of ten each.

A Kural is a couplet and each Kural is composed of 7 words spread across 2 lines [4 + 3 words].

The Couplets are two-line poems. Thirukkural consists of 133 adhigaram (chapters). Each Adhigaram consisting of 10 couplets. That’s 1330 two lined poems. Everything the author wants to convey to the world; he chose to do it in style. To be able to explain anything in just two lines is a thing of unimaginable artistic challenge. Thiruvalluvar does it with elegance. His work still shines after 2000 years.

உள்ளுவ தெல்லாம் உயர்வுள்ளல் மற்றது
தள்ளினுந் தள்ளாமை நீர்த்து

விளக்கம்:

எண்ணுவதெல்லாம் உயர்வைப்பற்றியே எண்ண வேண்டும், அவ்வுயர்வுக் கைகூடாவிட்டாலும் அவ்வாறு எண்ணுவதை விடக்கூடாது.

Transliteration (Tamil to English):

Ulluva thellaam uyarvullal matradhu
thallinunh thallaamai neerththu

English Couplet:

Whate'er you ponder, let your aim be loftly still,
Fate cannot hinder always, thwart you as it will.

Couplet Explanation:

In all that a king thinks of, let him think of his greatness; and if it should be thrust from him (by fate), it will have the nature of not being thrust from him.
